The spring concert of the University of Arizona Treble Glee brings together three Tucson-area ensembles, all led by University of Arizona students and alumnae. Treble Glee is one of eight UA choirs and features soprano and alto singers from a variety of majors across campus. Xuxiang Zou, director, and Inho Eom, assistant director, are both doctoral choral conducting students at the U of A. Arizona Women’s Chorus, founded in 1985, is an advanced community women’s chorus that sings a wide range of repertoire from jazz to classical, Broadway to international. This chorus’s history includes tours, collaborations with other musical groups, and commissioning of new works for women’s voices. The ensemble is under the direction of Terrie Ashbaugh, who received her master’s degree in choral conducting from the University of Arizona. Tucson Women’s Chorus carries on a 20-year tradition in Southern Arizona and is open to singers whether they read music or not. They focus on music that represents a wide range of human experiences and communities. This ensemble is under the direction of Natalie Killom, who earned her BA in Music from the University of Arizona. The concert will feature each group singing individually as well as combined works. The program includes Korean, Torres Strait Island, Appalachian, Israeli, Navajo and Brazilian folk song arrangements, popular American music, musical settings of the poetry of Sara Teasdale and Emily Dickinson, spiritual and gospel works, and pieces by contemporary American women composers. This concert will be an historic event, marking the first time these three ensembles have joined together in concert.
