The University of Arizona Outreach Honor Band will present their 25th Anniversary Concert on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. in Crowder Hall (located on the UA Campus in the Fred Fox School of Music). Under the direction of faculty member Dr. Matthew Williams and student conductors Evan Gibson, Jesús Jacquez and Daniel Vega, young student musicians will perform an entertaining concert of wind band literature.

UA Outreach Honor Band is open to students in grades 6 through 9. Auditions for next semester will take place on September 8, 2018. Families can register for auditions and find out more information at outreachband.music.arizona.edu. UA Outreach Honor Band rehearses on Saturday mornings throughout the semester and proudly partners young student musicians with UA music majors to offer specialized instruction on each instrument.  This year UA Outreach Honor Band celebrates its 25th anniversary, as they welcomed their new director, Dr. Matthew Williams who joined the music education faculty last fall.

He teaches courses in undergraduate and graduate music education, advises graduate theses and dissertations, and coordinates the Outreach Honor Band. Prior to arriving at the University of Arizona, Dr. Williams taught instrumental music education at the University of Delaware.

Dr. Williams’s research interests include music preference, preservice music teacher preparation, and music perception and cognition. He has presented sessions and research at state and national conferences including the National Association for Music Education National Conference, the Society for Music Teacher Education Symposium, and the Desert Skies Symposium on Research in Music Education. His work has been published in “UPDATE: Applications of Research in Music Education,” “Journal of Band Research,” “Research Perspectives in Music Education,” “Florida Music Director,” and “Bluegrass Music News.”

A native of Union, Kentucky, Dr. Williams previously taught band, music theory, music appreciation, and other classes in Kentucky. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree in horn performance and a Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree from the University of Kentucky, Master of Music degree in music education from Boston University, a Master of Music degree in wind conducting from the University of Louisville, and a Ph.D. in music education from Florida State University.
