The University of Arizona Opera Theater presents the American premiere of “Rhondda Rips It Up!” by composer Elena Langer and librettist Emma Jenkins. Directed by Cynthia Stokes, performances will take place in Crowder Hall on Friday, November 8 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, November 10 at 3:00 p.m. The opera will be sung in English with English supertitles. This opera contains adult themes and is best for mature audiences.
This raucous comedic opera was commissioned by The Welsh National Opera in 2018 to commemorate the centennial of English women winning the right to vote. It follows the true story of Margaret Haig Thomas, Viscountess Rhondda and the militant members of The Women’s Social and Political Union, more commonly known as Suffragettes. Join UA Opera Theater for the American premiere of “Rhondda Rips It Up,” as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the signing of the 19th Amendment into law in America!
Join us for a pre-show conversation with a panel of experts to discuss the impact of women’s fight for equality (opening night). There will be a suffragette lobby display and a get-out-the-vote opportunity from The League of Women Voters.
