Overview

Becoming an Undergraduate Music Major at The University of Arizona is a simple three-step process:

  1. Apply to The University of Arizona through the Office of Admissions: Apply Online or call 520-621-3237.
  2. Submit a School of Music Application and take an audition on your principal instrument or voice with a faculty reviewing panel. For scholarship consideration, you must audition by April 1.
  3. Perform at an acceptable level, receive your official UA acceptance notification, and you are a Music Major.

Degree Programs

The School of Music offers both Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts in Music degrees. For a complete listing of these degrees, visit the Degrees page.

The Bachelor of Music degree is a pre-professional degree, which concentrates on a specific discipline. This degree provides preparation toward professional work and courses are structured to give students breadth and depth of knowledge and skill within their discipline to compete successfully at the professional level. 

The Bachelor or Music degree requires an audition for admittance from the appropriate faculty member. No audition can be scheduled until an application for both the UA and the School of Music has been completed.

The Bachelor of Music Degrees include the following majors:

  • • Performance in Voice, on an Instrument, in Composition, or Jazz Studies
  • • Music Education (choral or instrumental emaphsis)

The Bachelor of Arts in Music degree emphasizes a general approach to the broad field of music and allows flexibility to study subjects beyond the major field of concentration. It is a liberal arts degree with a well-rounded approach to curriculum rather than a professional or specialized degree in music.

To graduate with a BA in Music, choose one of the following areas of emphasis:

  • • Instrumental Studies (requires an audition for admittance from the appropriate faculty member, no audition can be scheduled until an application for both the UA and the School of Music has been completed)
  • • Vocal Studies (requires an audition for admittance from the appropriate faculty member, no audition can be scheduled until an application for both the UA and the School of Music has been completed)
  • • Theory, History, & Criticism (no audition required)
  • • Integrated Studies (no audition required)

Application Requirements for Bachelor of Music – Performance

  • Admission to the University of Arizona
  • • School of Music application through Acceptd
  • • Letter of recommendation from a music teacher, band, orchestra, choir director, or private instructor that discusses applicant's musical aptitude and ability
  • • Applicants must take and pass the Online Music Theory Readiness Exam
  • Audition - no audition can be scheduled until an application for both the UA and the School of Music has been completed

Application Requirements for Bachelor of Music – Music Education (Instrumental or Choral)

  • Admission to the University of Arizona
  • • School of Music application through Acceptd
  • • Letter of recommendation from a music teacher, band, orchestra, choir director, or private instructor that discusses applicant's musical aptitude and ability
  • • Applicants must take and pass the Online Music Theory Readiness Exam
  • Audition - no audition can be scheduled until an application for both the UA and the School of Music has been completed

Application Requirements for Bachelor of Music – Composition

  • Admission to the University of Arizona
  • • Students who wish to be admitted into the BM degree is Composition must pass a portfolio review following the completion of two semester of MUS 240 - Introduction to Composition.  New students should apply for admissions to the BA in Music program in either the instrumental or vocal emphasis areas.
  • • School of Music application through Acceptd
  • • Letter of recommendation from a music teacher, band, orchestra, choir director, or private instructor that discusses applicant's musical aptitude and ability
  • • Applicants must take and pass the Online Music Theory Readiness Exam
  • Audition - no audition can be scheduled until an application for both the UA and the School of Music has been completed

Application Requirements for Bachelor of Music – Jazz Studies

  • Admission to the University of Arizona.

  • • Letter of recommendation from a music teacher, band, orchestra, choir director, or private instructor that discusses applicant's musical aptitude and ability
  • • Applicants must take and pass the Online Music Theory Readiness Exam
  • Audition - no audition can be scheduled until an application for both the UA and the School of Music has been completed

Application Requirements for Bachelor of Arts – Music (Instrumental or Vocal Studies)
