The University of Arizona Fred Fox School of Music is proud to announce the publication of the “SAGE International Encyclopedia of Music and Culture,” edited by Janet Sturman, professor of music and associate dean of the Graduate College. Among the contributors from more than 65 different countries who wrote entries for this impressive publication, are 24 University of Arizona students, faculty and alumni, of which 17 are from the Fred Fox School of Music (see list below). Doctoral musicology student Olman Alfaro and alumnus Cecilio Novillo (MM, musicology) are managing editors.
The five-volume set presents key concepts in the study of music in its cultural context and offers an introduction to the discipline of ethnomusicology, its methods, concerns, and its contributions to knowledge and understanding of the world’s musical cultures, styles, and practices. The diverse voices of contributors to this encyclopedia confirm ethnomusicology’s fundamental ethos of inclusion and respect for diversity. Combined, the multiplicity of topics and approaches are presented in an easy-to-search A-Z format and offer a fresh perspective on the field and the subject of music in culture.
“Collaborating with this outstanding group of scholars to create the publication has been an honor,” said Janet Sturman. “There have been many challenges over the long, yet rewarding process. What a joy to finally see and share the results! I hope readers enjoy this truly international encyclopedia and use it to build new knowledge.”
Copies of the books will be available for public viewing on Tuesday, April 23, 2019, during a celebration in honor of Janet Sturman, who is retiring at the end of the academic year. The event, sponsored by the Graduate College, will take place from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Union Gallery, Student Union Memorial Center. (RSVP is requested by calling 520-621-7815.)
