Recent Fred Fox School of Music alumna, Dr. Piper Pack-Smith will have her article “Rediscovering the Unique Role of the Contralto in the Operas of Gioachino Rossini” published in the June 2019 issue of the National Opera Association’s Opera Journal. This article, based on her 2018 dissertation, explores some of Rossini’s favorite leading contraltos and what drew the composer to this unique sound as well as uncovering some of the fascinating history of lower-voiced women in opera.
