The UA Mexico Vocal Collaborative is a one-week seminar at the Fred Fox School Music designed to form a bridge between Mexican opera students and the University of Arizona. It is coordinated by Kristin Dauphinais, chair of vocal studies, but is a collaboration of UA Global, UA Latin American Initiatives, Consulate of Mexico in Tucson, UA Graduate College, International Student Services, Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra, The Opera Guild of Southern Arizona, The Opera Festival of San Luis Potosí (Mexico), The Linus Lerner Vocal Competition and the Fred Fox School of Music. Students in this program are from all over Mexico and are chosen at the San Luis Opera Festival and Linus Lerner Vocal Competition in July by UA faculty artists Kristin Dauphinais and Andrew Stuckey. In September, the singers arrive at the generous donation of airfare sponsored by the Consulate of Mexico in Tucson, with housing provided by the Opera Guild of Southern Arizona and they are offered lessons and classes by UA voice and opera faculty (Kristin Dauphinais, Andrew Stuckey, Yunah Lee and Cynthia Stokes) as well as symposia on international admissions, procedures and scholarships offered by UA Global and the Graduate College.
The singers chosen for 2019 will perform a free-admission recital of operatic arias and Mexican song and zarzuela at the Fred Fox School of Music on Thursday, September 12 at 7:00 p.m. in Holsclaw Hall. Then, they will also be featured on two concerts with the Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra. The first of these concerts will be at Sunnyside High School at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 14 and then the week culminates with a typically sold-out Mexican Independence Day Concert at the Fox Theatre in downtown Tucson on Sunday, September 15 at 6:00 p.m.
In addition to this experience, students are offered separate auditions with the Fred Fox School of Music and up to two students per year are eligible to be offered a tuition reduction scholarship from the Graduate College, which in effect reduces international tuition to the in-state rate- a scholarship valued at over $40,000 over two years. Current Master of Music degree student, Diana Peralta, is the first of what we hope to be many of the aspiring Mexican opera singers at Fred Fox School of Music to come through this program and enrich the voice and opera program at the University of Arizona.
