Guest Artist: Dr. Mann-Wen Lo, violin

Enjoy a concert exploring Schumann’s love, life, and music, featuring Schumann’s Violin Sonata No. 2 performed by violinist Dr. Mann-Wen Lo (Professor of Practice in Violin, University of Houston) and University of Arizona’s very own Dr. Fanya Lin (Associate Professor of Practice in Piano), as well as Schumann’s iconic Piano Quartet performed by violinist Mann-Wen Lo, violist Esteban Hernandez Parra, cellist Juan Mejia, and pianist Fanya Lin.

Guest Artist Biography

Violinist MANN-WEN LO has captivated audiences worldwide. Her performances have
been featured on radio and television in the United States, Taiwan, Japan, Panama, and
France. She has appeared at prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully
Hall, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and Taiwan National Concert Hall. Her recording with
the Mana Music Quartet, showcasing the music of the last monarch of Hawaiʻi Queen
Liliʻuokalani, earned the Instrumental Album of the Year at the 2021 Nā Hōkū Hanohano
Awards.
As a soloist, Mann-Wen has performed with ensembles such as the Taipei Symphony
Orchestra, Academy of Taiwan Strings, Tokyo Geidai Strings Ensemble, and American
Contemporary Ballet in Los Angeles. She has served as guest concertmaster for the
Pasadena Opera, American Contemporary Ballet, and Kaleidoscope Chamber
Orchestra, as well as guest assistant concertmaster for the Dallas Chamber Symphony.
Her recordings have been released by labels like Warner Classics, Navona Records,
and CMH Label Group.
An avid chamber musician, Mann-Wen has shared the stage with members of the
Juilliard, Cleveland, Quatuor Ysaÿe, and Takács string quartets, among others. She has
been invited as a guest artist for series such as Camera Lucida in San Diego, Le Salon
de Musiques, Castleton Chamber Players, New Asia Chamber Music Society, and the
Da Camera Society in Los Angeles. She has also performed at renowned festivals
including Yellow Barn Chamber Music Festival, Menuhin Festival Gstaad, Norfolk
Chamber Music Festival, Saito Kinen Festival (now Seiji Ozawa Festival), ANA Music
Week, and Hawaii Chamber Music Festival.
Mann-Wen’s artistic exploration extends beyond Western classical music, leading to
collaborations with Grammy-winning artists such as Béla Fleck, Kalani Peʻa, Jake
Shimabukuro, and Pandit Partha Bose. As a recording artist with the Vitamin String
Quartet, she contributes to the project’s innovative classical-crossover renditions of
popular music across various genres.
A graduate of the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music, Mann-
Wen completed her Doctor of Musical Arts degree with an Outstanding Achievement
Award under the guidance of Glenn Dicterow. She has earned her academic minor in
Music Teaching and Learning, as well as elective fields in instrumental conducting with
Larry Livingston and Jazz Studies with David Arnay. Mann-Wen also holds degrees
from Yale School of Music (MM), studying with Syoko Aki and the New England
Conservatory (BM), mentored by Masuko Ushioda. She has worked closely and greatly
influenced by Ralph Kirshbaum, Roger Tapping, Daniel Phillips, Donald Weilerstein, and
members of the Tokyo String Quartet.
Mann-Wen is a Professor of Practice in Violin at the University of Houston’s Moores
School of Music and serves on the faculty of summer festivals including the Deutsch-
Polnische Festival für junge Musiker in Bremen, Montecito International Music Festival,
and Texas Music Festival. She has also served as a juror for prominent competitions,
including the International Music Competition Opus 2022, Houston Virtuosi Concerto
Competition 2023, AAMA 10th Young Musicians Festival Competition, and ASTACAP.

Faculty Artist Biography

Described as a “striking interpreter” who gives a “committed and heartfelt performance” by Musical America and The New York Times, Steinway Artist FANYA LIN has entranced audiences worldwide with her charismatic and fiery performances. Her orchestral appearances include the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Utah Symphony, Savannah Philharmonic, The Jackson Symphony, among others. Her concerto album Rhapsodic featuring Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini with Maestro Theodore Kuchar and the Lublin Philharmonic was released by Navona Records in 2023, and selected as Textura’s “Top 20 Classical (Instrumental: Quartet/Ensemble/Orchestra)” for 2024. 

Inspired by her mentors Dr. Yu-Jane Yang, Professor Hung-Kuan Chen, and Professor Lydia Artymiw for their dedication in education, Dr. Fanya Lin is currently serving as the Associate Professor of Practice in Piano at the University of Arizona, where she teaches applied piano lessons, chamber music, piano literature, and the Yoga for Musicians course.
