“Known and Strange Things”

Arizona and Symphonic Choirs

Sunday, October 16, 3:00 p.m.

Grace St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 2331 E. Adams St.

Free and open to the public

Arizona and Symphonic Choirs present a dynamic and engaging program, juxtaposing familiar works with outstanding music that rarely appears on modern concert stages, by a diverse array of celebrated composers. The concert opens with sumptuous sacred works by preeminent Baroque Jewish composer Salomone Rossi, Brazilian Classical composer José Mauricio Nunes Garcia, and W.A. Mozart – the latter two with chamber orchestra and soloists. An array of elegant and innovative partsongs comprises the second half of the program, including settings by indigenous Mexican composer Blas Galindo and American composers George Theophilus Walker, Augusta Read Thomas and Ysaÿe Maria Barnwell of Sweet Honey in the Rock. The concert closes with Paul Basler’s boisterous “Alleluia” from Songs of Faith– a tour de force for piano, horn solo and choir.
