Guest Artists, Music Education Friday April 4, 2025 - 9:30a.m. to 10:30a.m.Friday April 4, 2025 - 4:00p.m. to 6:00p.m.

Venue: Rm 232, Rm 146

Scholar, educator and award-winning harpist Noël Wan will be on campus for one day only, on Friday, April 4th to give the following two presentations. Finding Your Why: Building a Music Career with Purpose & Electroacoustic Harp Composition Demonstration

Find Your Why: Building a music career with purpose, RM 232, 9:30-10:30AM: Why do we want to be musicians? What kind of impact do we hope to make on the people around us? Students will learn that a values-centered approach to career-building can be a powerful tool for industry innovation/impact and, more importantly, foster a stronger sense of agency in the early stages of their professional lives.

Introduction to the Electroacoustic Harp RM 146, 4-6PM: In this presentation, Noël will introduce works for electroacoustic harp from her recital program “River of Heaven” (Stellar Sonata by Caroline Lizotte, Wind Harp by Larry Sitsky) and the piece Pull No More (2024) by Liliya Ugay, which was the winning composition for the 2024 MTNA Distinguished Composer of the Year award. Approachable compositional applications of the electroacoustic harp will be explored, such as general amplification, fixed and/or live media layering, and effects design. The goal of this presentation is to introduce, practically and philosophically, the sonic world of the electroacoustic harp to performers and composers.
