This competition honors the memory of Michael Moore, a dedicated pianist-performer and alumnus of our school. Our undergraduate piano students will perform for generous scholarship awards. Join us for this exciting event as we celebrate the achievements of our talented young pianists.

Student Biographies

 

Contestant 1 – CJ Chen

 

CJ Chen is a sophomore at the University of Arizona and a student at the Fred Fox School of Music pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. He has played piano for 14 years, learning and studying through private lessons from the age of 5. He has previously studied with Dr. Shu-Ching Cheng and currently studies with Dr. Daniel Linder. CJ has performed as a volunteer accompanist for school choirs and school musicals at a young age and has also performed in the Tucson Music Teachers Association Piano Ensemble for 10 years prior to his piano studies at the Fred Fox School of Music. He has previously performed in the Michael Moore Piano Competition and this year’s competition will be his second time competing.

 

Contestant 2 – Katherine Webster

 

Katherine Webster, a Tucson native, is currently studying piano performance with Dr. Fanya Lin at the University of Arizona. Katherine began piano lessons at age ten and studied with Jennifer Faulkner Friede, Victoria MacDonald, and Dr. Nino Bakradze. In 2013, she performed in the National Piano Playing Auditions and received a Superior Plus (the highest possible) rating. In 2015, she was a finalist in the auditions for the James R. Anthony Honors Recital. For the past four years she has performed in the Fred Fox School of Music Concerto Competitions and was named alternate for the past three years. She also received second place in the school’s Michael Moore Memorial Piano Competition in Spring 2021. Over the past several years, she has performed in master classes with Bernadette Harvey and Bernadene Blaha. Also, an avid composer, Katherine was involved in the Tucson Symphony Orchestra Young Composers Project for five years. Her compositions have been performed in several concerts. Katherine also enjoys teaching several private piano students and hopes to expand her studio in the future. When she is not working on music, she enjoys reading books, watching movies, and spending time with her family and friends.

 

Contestant 3 – Chet Oreck

 

Chet Oreck is a senior majoring in French Language and Studies and Russian Language and Studies, and minoring in Piano Performance as a student of Dr. Daniel Linder. Chet is primarily interested in classical music of the Baroque Era, the late 19th century, and the early 20th century, as well as the interaction between general cultural trends and musical development during these time periods. Aside from studies, Chet loves gardening and cooking for family and friends.

 

Contestant 4 – Hesheng Guan

 

Hesheng Guan, a native of China, is a first-year undergraduate student currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music under the guidance of Dr. Daniel Linder. He studied the piano with Yidan Yu in the Affiliated Music High School of Jilin College of Fine Arts (Jilin, China), where he earned the Yamaha (Asia) Music Scholarship based on his outstanding academic and major-area-related performance. Besides piano, Hesheng also loves inline roller skating and cooking.
