2023 Tucson Desert Song Festival & UArizona School of Music present: Is This Song: Defining a Genre

About the Performers:

Asleif Willmer, soprano

Hailed as “a most incredible voice” (Arizona Daily Star) with “glowing color and exceptional artistry” (Schmopera), soprano Asleif Willmer delights audiences with her captivating stage presence, nuanced artistry, and polished lyric-coloratura soprano voice. Asleif has sung leading roles in several opera houses including Florida Grand Opera, Opera Saratoga, International Vocal Arts Institute, Brevard Music Festival, and City Lyric Opera. Highlights include Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, Adina in L’elisir d’amore, Baby Doe in The Ballad of Baby Doe, Adele in Die Fledermaus, and Tytania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Equally at home in the concert hall, Asleif is an artist with the GRAMMY-nominated True Concord Voices and Orchestra and has been a featured soloist internationally and nationally. She has also received top awards from many organizations, including the Metropolitan Opera Council Auditions, Classical Singer Competition, and MTNA Competition. Asleif received her Doctor of Musical Arts from Arizona State University and is currently pursuing an MBA and a MS in Marketing from the University of Arizona while upholding a full singing schedule.

 

Martina Portychova, mezzo-soprano

After immigrating to the U.S., she completed her Bachelor and Master of Music at the University of Arizona in Tucson where she studied with Faye Robinson. She has also worked with soprano Martina Arroyo, Kathrine Johnson and conductors Thomas Cockrell, Steven Crawford, Martin Doubravsky, Elizabeth Hastings, Mariusz Smolij, and Guillaume Tourniere. She appeared in operatic productions at the University of Arizona, the Opera Theater F. X. Salda in Liberec, Czech Republic, the State Prague Opera, St. Bonaventure University, NY and in concert with the Acadian Symphony Orchestra in Louisiana. Ms. Portychova has performed the roles of Mrs. Herring (Albert Herring), La Principessa and Mistress of the Novices (Suor Angelica), Angelina (La Cenerentola) Rosina (The Barber of Seville), Meg Page (The Merry Wives of Windsor, Falstaff), Cherubino (Marriage of Figaro), Baba (Medium), Jo (Little Women), Old Lady (Candide), Nicklausse/Muse (Tales of Hoffmann), and Sister Miriam (The Three Hermits).
