Financial Aid for Graduate Students

Various types of financial assistance are available to graduate students in music, and application forms are included with the admissions materials. Types of financial aid are described below.

Graduate Assistantships (GA)

The School of Music awards approximately 50 graduate assistantships each year. Most GAs are quarter-time positions which require a work commitment of ten hours per week. Duties may include teaching or working in other areas of need within the School of Music.

As a GA you will receive the following benefits of your appointment:

  • As a GA you are classified as an Arizona Resident for tuition purposes, regardless of your domicile
  • As a GA you will also receive a 50% waiver of the Resident Tuition
  • As a GA you will receive a bi-weekly payment for your 10 hours a week work, which is greater than the 50% balance of tuition owed
  • As a GA you will receive a waiver for the cost of University of Arizona student health insurance premiums
  • As a GA you will receive a 10% discount at the University of Arizona Bookstore
  • Other scholarships may be available in addition to the GA benefits described above

Interested applicants can indicate their desire to be considered on their School of Music application in Acceptd no later than March 1st prior to their Fall admission.

Graduate College Fellowships (GCF)

Graduate Fellowship funding is available annually. These awards are granted to highly accomplished students and start at $1,000 per semester for Masters and $2,500 per semester for a DMA/PhD. Students must be degree seeking, enrolled full time, and maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0 to hold these fellowships. While award offers are for one year only, funding for a second year may be offered based on funding availability and maintaining scholarship eligibility requirements. Nominations are made by School of Music faculty members. For specific questions about these awards, contact Mrs. Shelly Braun.

Graduate Tuition Scholarships (GTS)

Graduate tuition scholarships are available annually and can apply towards base tuition. Students must be degree seeking, enrolled full time, and maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0 to hold these tuition scholarships. While award offers are for one year only, funding for a second year may be offered based on funding availability and maintaining scholarship eligibility requirements. All recommendations for graduate tuition scholarships originate with the student’s major professor for consideration. For specific questions about these awards, contact Mrs. Shelly Braun.

Federal and Other Student Loans

All loans are handled through the Office of Scholarship and Financial Aid (OSFA), A Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) should be filed using school code 001083. The total processing time can take up to four months. Therefore, early application is advised.

Scholarship Universe

Students are encouraged to apply on Scholarship Universe (SU) for various music and non-music awards for which they may be eligible. It is important to apply prior to the deadline.
