Alumni Spotlight:

This August, Matthew Whitehouse (DMA organ performance/ethnomusicology, 2012) will be giving a presentation on his music/astronomy work at the Global Hands-On Universe conference in France.

Matthew Whitehouse has developed a dual-focus career as an organist/composer and astronomy educator. Since 2013, he has held the position of Observatory Manager at the South Carolina State Museum in Columbia, which opened a new planetarium/observatory facility in 2014. In addition to his museum work, he serves as Director of Music at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Lexington, SC.

Dr. Whitehouse has developed an astronomy-themed organ recital program which he has presented at Christchurch Transitional Cathedral (New Zealand) and St. Paul’s Cathedral in Melbourne, Australia, in addition to U.S. venues. His organ work “Corona,” composed for the 2017 total solar eclipse over the USA, was performed by organist Vince Ryan at the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, this past September.
