Developing a Sense for Rhythm and Timing with Latin American Piano Pieces
The rhythmic and timing challenges of the Latin American piano pieces in this lecture/demonstration can help students gain a better sense of direction and macrobeat, and a deeper understanding of rhythm that goes beyond merely counting note values.

Saturday, April 7, 2018  11:45-12:45 p.m.
Embracing the Americas: A Lecture-Recital on Ginastera’s Doce Preludios Americanos and Their Pedagogical and Stylistic Significance
Ginastera’s Preludios Americanos go beyond the overt Argentine nationalism of his earlier compositions to embrace a broader “American” language. Parallel to its stylistic significance, this work has high pedagogical value, as it spans the mid-intermediate to advanced levels of pianistic difficulty, and is often used by piano teachers in the United States. My presentation will introduce the set from historical, stylistic, analytical and pedagogical angles, and will include a proposed ordering by level of difficulty.

Pianist Alejandro Cremaschi teaches performance and pedagogy at the University of Colorado Boulder. He holds degrees from the University of Minnesota, the University of Maryland Baltimore County and the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo in Argentina. He studied piano with Dora De Marinis, Nancy Roldan and Lydia Artymiw. He regularly performs, teaches and records Latin American repertoire. He is the editor and recording artist for the revised pedagogical edition of Alberto Ginastera’s Twelve American Preludes Op. 12, published by Carl Fischer Publishing in 2016.
