The University of Arizona Opera Theater presents a double bill of one-act operas: The Face on the Barroom Floor and La Curandera.
With music by Henry Mollicone and libretto by John S. Bowman, The Face on the Barroom Floor moves between the present day and the Old West, revealing parallel stories of love, jealousy, and regret surrounding a mysterious portrait painted on a barroom floor.
La Curandera, with music by Robert Xavier Rodriguez and libretto by Mary Medrick, is set in present-day Tepoztlán, Mexico, where folk healing, magic, and matters of the heart intertwine. Inspired by Mozart’s Bastien und Bastienne, the opera brings a distinctly Mexican setting and musical flavor to a story of love, suspicion, and reconciliation.
Together, these two works offer an evening of intimate opera theater filled with humor, mystery, romance, and vivid storytelling.
