University of Arizona Jazz Students Earn 2026 DownBeat Student Music Awards Honors

May 14, 2026

The University of Arizona School of Music is proud to celebrate two outstanding students from its Jazz Studies program who were recognized in the 2026 DownBeat Student Music Awards.

Nelly Hawley Hayes earned recognition as a Winner in the Vocal Jazz Soloist – College/Undergraduate category, honoring her exceptional artistry and performance excellence.

Benjamin Canfield received an Outstanding Arrangement award for his work, “Reflections,” in the Small Ensemble & College/Graduate category, highlighting his creativity and achievement as an arranger and composer.

Presented annually by DownBeat magazine, the Student Music Awards are widely regarded as some of the most prestigious honors in jazz education. Founded in 1934, DownBeat has long been recognized as one of the most influential publications in the jazz world, helping shape and celebrate the art form for generations. Its Student Music Awards — often referred to as the “Grammy Awards for student musicians” — spotlight exceptional young talent from leading colleges, conservatories, and universities across the globe.

Receiving recognition from DownBeat places students among an elite group of emerging jazz artists and reflects an extraordinary level of musical achievement, creativity, and dedication.

These honors also reflect the strength and excellence of the University of Arizona Jazz Studies program and its commitment to fostering innovative artistry and performance at the highest level.

The School of Music congratulates Nelly Hawley Hayes and Benjamin Canfield on this incredible accomplishment.
