ViolaRola 2026: Guest Artist Breana Halimé McCullough

Faculty Artists, Guest Artists, Strings Saturday February 28, 2026 - 5:00p.m. to 6:30p.m.Sunday March 1, 2026 - 9:00a.m. to 5:00p.m.

Venue: Holsclaw Hall, 1017 N. Olive Rd

 

Viola Rola 2026, hosted by friends, students, and faculty of The University of Arizona School of Music.

Our main event will take place on Sunday, March 1st at the UA School of Music, starting at 9am and ending with a viola ensemble concert at 4pm in Holsclaw Hall. 

We will open with a faculty/student welcome concert on Saturday, February 28th at 7pm in Holsclaw Hall, free admission!

A full day of workshops, masterclass-like collective learning sessions, Indigenous and Latin American musics for viola, and side-by-side playing with local and guest artists
Breana Halimé McCullough, Dr. Kimberly Hankins, Michael Davis, Bethany Wigtil, Dr. Gabriela Ocádiz, TuSon Jarocho, Desert ViolAZ, and Dr. Esteban Hernández Parra

All violists are encouraged to join: these are free events for all ages, abilities, and backgrounds: come if you enjoy playing the viola and we will gladly welcome your participation at any skill level.

There is no required fee to participate, and there is free parking nearby during the events. We do welcome volunteers who would like to support us with logistics throughout the weekend.

GUEST ARTIST BREANA HALIMÉ MCCULLOUGH

Breana Halimé McCullough is a Karuk violist, activist, and scholar whose work explores Indigenous representation in Early Music and the repatriation of Karuk ancestors and cultural materials, including archival songs, with an emphasis on Tribal, family, and data sovereignty. A performer with ensembles such as Carpe Diem String Quartet, Baroque Chamber Orchestra of Colorado, and Sound Salon, McCullough integrates performance with anti-colonial scholarship and Indigenous empowerment. They recently published a chapter in Teaching Difficult Topics, reflecting on Indigenous perspectives and ethics in pedagogy and performance within the movement of historically informed performance. McCullough also teaches through the Heartbeat Music Project on the Diné (Navajo) Reservation. She resides in Tiohtià:ke/Mooniyang/Montréal, Québec.
