University of Arizona opera director Cynthia Stokes has been named the 2025 winner of the Charles Nelson Reilly American Prize in Directing in the Small University category for her University of Arizona production of Thumbprint. The national honor recognizes excellence in stage directing and places Stokes’ work among the most distinguished opera productions in the country.
Presented by The American Prize, one of the nation’s most respected nonprofit performing arts competitions, the award celebrates visionary leadership in opera, theater, and music at the collegiate and professional levels.
Stokes learned of the honor in early December, receiving a congratulatory message from David Katz, founder and chief judge of The American Prize, who praised the production:
“Thumbprint stood out as a truly exceptional production, and we hope this recognition brings additional attention to your considerable musical gifts.”
“It was an overwhelming and joyful moment,” Stokes said. “This is truly rarified air, and I’m deeply grateful to everyone who helped bring this production to life.”
Thumbprint, composed by Kamala Sankaram with a libretto by Susan Yankowitz, is a timely and powerful opera that explores identity, belonging, and resilience. The University of Arizona production was conducted by Kristin Roach, who brought the project to campus and led it with what Stokes described as “remarkable skill.” The creative team also included Dr. Jacob Ransom (Guest Artist Percussionist), Fatima del Corona Toro (Assistant Conductor), and Sophia Su (Coach and Accompanist).

At the heart of the production were the University of Arizona opera students, whose artistry and professionalism were central to the performance’s success. “Your grace and unwavering positivity, both in rehearsal and onstage, made it a true honor to share this project with you,” Stokes shared in her acknowledgments.
The production was further supported by a dedicated design and production team, including Sally Day (Scenic Design), Chris Allen (Costume Design), Todd Poelstra (Lighting Design), Brian McElroy and Kenny Kriha (Stage Managers), Carson Scott (Production Manager), Reid Ferris (Audio Support), and Rick Chavez (Video Support).
Stokes, who holds the Amelia T. Rieman Endowed Chair for Opera at the University of Arizona, is nationally recognized for her innovative, community-centered approach to opera. Her work often embraces immersive and site-specific performance, and her directing credits span major opera companies and institutions across the country.
The American Prize recognition highlights not only Stokes’ leadership but also the strength of the University of Arizona School of Music’s opera program and its commitment to providing students with nationally recognized artistic opportunities.
“This award belongs to the entire team,” Stokes said. “Go University of Arizona School of Music Wildcats.”
