Three imaginative works for wind quintet chart a journey through three very different sound worlds. Reena Esmail’s The Light is the Same (2017), a fascinating exploration of two contrasting Hindustani raags, embodies Rumi’s notion that “The lamps may be different / but the light is the same.” Audacious rhythms and otherworldly colors characterize Mario Lavista’s Cinco Danzas Breves (1994), already a classic of the contemporary Mexican chamber music repertoire. The program concludes with Dream States (2020) by Fred Fox School of Music alum Colin Nossek (BM ’20). This deeply impressive work charms with its inventive melodies and evocative depictions of the liminal states between waking, sleeping, and dreaming.

The Arizona Wind Quintet is the faculty ensemble-in-residence at the University of Arizona Fred Fox School of Music in Tucson, Arizona. Formed in 1977, AWQ has cultivated a tradition of excellence in both performance and teaching. The quintet mentors the award-winning Fred Fox Graduate Wind Quintet, the university’s premiere student chamber ensemble. In 2018, AWQ enjoyed a residency at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in Mexico City. A tour of the Los Angeles area in 2019 included performances at the Mexican Consulate and UCLA. The ensemble recently recorded a disc for Toccata Classics, Hans Winterberg: Chamber Music Volume I, released in 2018.
