Fred Fox School of Music Faculty Member Sara Fraker Receives Grant

Arizona Commission on the Arts Grant Awarded to
Fred Fox School of Music Faculty Member Sara Fraker

Assistant Professor of Oboe Sara Fraker has been awarded a 2017 Artist Research and Development Grant from the Arizona Commission on the Arts. She will commission, perform, and record a new piece of music composed by Asha Srinivasan and inspired by Robin Wall Kimmerer’s book, "Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants" (Milkweed Editions, 2013). Drawing upon ideas from the emerging field of ecomusicology, the project will explore the intersection of environmental sustainability, soundscape ecology, and musical performance. Dr. Fraker will give the world premiere of this work in her upcoming Faculty Artist Series recital at the University of Arizona Fred Fox School of Music. The free-admission performance will take place in Holsclaw Hall on February 22, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. Drs. Kimmerer and Srivinasan will give a pre-concert talk at 6:00 p.m. that evening.
