Since late April, Dr. Chad R. Nicholson, Director of Bands at the University of Arizona School of Music, has been based in Tokyo, Japan, where he is serving as resident wind ensemble conductor at the Musashino Academia Musicae, a prominent music university known for its rigorous performance training and international outlook.
In this role, Dr. Nicholson is working closely with the Musashino wind ensemble, leading rehearsals, shaping artistic interpretation, and collaborating with student musicians in an intensive and immersive rehearsal environment. His residency reflects a continued commitment to global music education and the development of wind band performance at an international level.
Over the course of his time in Japan, Dr. Nicholson will lead the ensemble on a tour to Hokkaido, expanding the group’s performance reach beyond Tokyo. Following the tour, he will also collaborate with the ensemble on a recording project, resulting in a new album scheduled to be completed ahead of their July performance at the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre Concert Hall.
The engagement will culminate in a featured performance at the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre Concert Hall, one of Japan’s premier performance venues for large-scale orchestral and wind ensemble works.
Dr. Nicholson notes that the experience has been both artistically rewarding and culturally engaging. Leading rehearsals in Japanese has brought unexpected moments of humor and connection with students, adding a lighthearted dimension to the intensive rehearsal process. Despite occasional language challenges, he emphasizes the enthusiasm, discipline, and musical dedication of the ensemble.
Dr. Nicholson’s residency in Tokyo continues to highlight the global impact of wind ensemble performance and the importance of cross-cultural collaboration in music education and artistry.
